How to Fix Common Errors in Android 6.0

Android 6 problems

Android 6.0 brought in a lot of new stuff to the playground, but there were some bugs and errors that also came with it. While Google has been delivering great updates to their Android platform, some of the common errors are bound to slip through the gate. This article will be addressing some of the common errors in Android 6.0 and how you can solve them yourself.

For the sake of ease, I will be only addressing Nexus devices in this article. There are certain reasons for this, and many Android manufacturers like to put their own skin on stock Android so the Android 6.0 on Samsung devices will be provided by Samsung themselves.

This is quite common in the Android market, HTC, Sony, Asus and even Huawei like to customize the stock Android experience and make it their own. So some of the common error fixes may apply to those devices, but most of them are for Nexus smartphones and tablets. So let’s start shooting some common errors and get rid of them.

Android 6.0 Installation Problems

So the latest update is available for your device, but somehow it is not initiating. Even if it is running the update, the installation gets stuck at a certain point, and you can’t use your phone for the duration. This is a very common problem among Nexus and other Android smartphone users.

  1. One thing that is surely going to work is letting your phone die. No, not smash it with a hammer, just let the battery run out. Then the phone is completely off, later charge with full hundred percent and then turn it back on.

  2. If that doesn’t work, you can try clearing the cache partition of the smartphone. Here’s how you can achieve that:

    • Press and hold the volume down in the power button on your device. Do this until you see something pop up on the screen.
    • You should be able to see a larger at the top of the screen by now. Tap the volume button down until you reach the recovery option. After that press the power button to select the option.
    • Now, you will see the Android mascot laying on the screen with its chest wide open. Some smartphones also show a red triangle with an exclamation mark to represent the nature of the situation. Yes, it is not usually recommended to access this menu.
    • Now, while holding the power button, you need to press the volume up once and then release the power button.
    • A few of the items will be displayed on the screen now. All you have to do is tap the volume down button until you reach the option that shows “Wipe Cache Partition” option. A point to be noted here is that this option may be different for certain smartphones. For example, some smartphones use the label “erase cache partition” instead of wipe.
    • Now a message will appear at the bottom of the screen. Now, sit back because it can take a little while to complete the process. When it is done, a message will appear on the screen. After that simply restart your smartphone, and that’s it.

Android 6.0 Battery Charging Problem

It has been going on for a while, whenever Android updates their OS, Nexus devices tend to get charging problems. There may be a big conspiracy behind all of this but some of the reasons are quite funny and easy to solve. Here is how you can solve Android 6.0 Marshmallow battery drainage problem.

Solutions

Backup Nexus 6P

  1. One of the most common reasons why your battery is not charging properly is an abnormal charge cycle. All you need to do here is charge your device to 100% and let it drain to around 3% mark. After that, charge it fully again and let it drain back. Redo this three or four times and there is a high chance that your battery will return to normal.

  2. If the above method doesn’t work, there might be some reasons why this is happening. One of the most common ones is that you are using a third-party charging cable with your device. I highly recommend getting a new cable for your Nexus, preferably a first party one supplied directly by the manufacturer.

  3. Some other people also use third-party chargers that claim to boost the charging speed of the smartphone. I highly recommend that you slap that one out for an original, first-party manufacturer charger that is compatible with your smartphone. Using the higher amp charger is not going to charge your device faster but may damage it in the long run.

  1. When a new software update lands, it may take a few charge cycles to determine the full potential of the battery. This is a software side issue and can only be solved by using your device more. So let the OS settle down a bit and gauge how you use the device, there is a high chance that it will return the battery drainage to normal once that is done.

  2. If you’re still facing some battery drainage problems, I highly recommend you check out the best apps to fix battery drainage as well as best battery monitoring apps for Android.

Android 6.0 Wi-Fi Problems

Solutions

  1. First things first, simply restart your Nexus device and see if it resolves the problem. Turning your Wi-Fi on and off a few times may also do the trick.

  2. The oldest trick in the book to resume normal Wi-Fi speeds is simply turning off your Wi-Fi router and turning it back on after five minutes. There is a very high chance that this will resolve all your Wi-Fi related problems.

  3. Still, if this is not working you can also try updating the firmware of the router. You can contact the manufacturer’s website for more details on how you can manually update the router firmware.

  4. If the problems persist, remove or forget the network connection on your smartphone or tablet. Reentering all the information will probably reset the Wi-Fi connection to its default state and help you in recovering that lost speed.

  5. If your smartphone allows it, you can also try changing the frequency of the Wi-Fi. To do that tap on the vertical dots on the top right corner of the screen and bring up the advanced menu. You should be in the Wi-Fi menu to see the vertical dots, though. Now simply go to the Wi-Fi frequency band and try out different options available there. By default, it is set to automatic, and it is recommended that you keep it at that if no other frequency works.

Android 6.0 Performance Problems

Some users have reported having lag and stutters in the performance of their devices off the update. While this is not common, there are some ways you can remove all those performance hitches.

Solutions

  1. One of the easiest ways is to clear the cache partition of your device. If you need help doing that, refer to the first problem in this very article. If you’re using an older device, this method does come in handy and works well on them. I tested this on a Nexus 7 2013 and the device returned to normal after clearing the cache.

  2. Another thing to do is to monitor the RAM usage of your device. The RAM manager allows you to see what kind of apps are using your available resources. If an app is active a lot, you may need to either delete it or restrict its usage.

  3. Many of the Nexus devices only come with internal storage, if your device is filled to the brim, I highly recommend clearing at a little bit of space. The much-needed breathing room will allow the device to perform better and as a result, you’ll face fewer slowdowns. I recommend using a good photo backup app for Android to move the bulk of your photos and videos to the cloud.

I have a Note 5. After the upgrade to 6.0.1, I find I can’t stream content from IHEART radio and Google Play with Power Saving mode on. Also, I have to open the app and then turn on Bluetooth in order for Google play to connect to the network. I also can’t use Google now with PS mode on. Are these problems common? I didn’t have any problems until I upgraded.

The power saving mode basically shuts off background data for your apps. You can turn this off for certain apps like Spotify so when you are using power saving mode it is left unaffected. Not sure where the setting is on the note 5 but try going to settings>battery>more>battery optimization.

I thought that the new version would be better . Rather making improvements it is worse. Using a Samsung Galaxy S5. Facebook doesn’t post. And to be honest everything is slower, typing, Apps, WiFi. This is a joke. Make me improvements, don’t hinder me give me progress, don’t make me wait longer to do things. Better yet. I need my old operating system back.

    • Billa on

      Hey Frank,

Sorry to hear you are having problems. Generally speaking, the 6.0 was way better than 5.0, and I can personally attest. I recommend a full factory reset before you root and roll back the android version.

I have an LG G3, and ever since I got 6.0, my visual voicemail shuts my phone down. It allows me to listen remotely to messages left on my office phone as always, but the screen goes black during the playback and will not respond at all. The message still plays in its entirety, and the clock and other features still work through the circle window when the cover is closed, but I can only use the full screen after a shutdown and reboot. Thoughts?

    • Judy on

Problems are very common after an update since data from the previous version could be causing issues with the new data that came with the update. I would try a factory reset but first remember to backup all your information.
