5 Awesome Android Apps for Taking Care of your Pets

Pets are great except that you have an additional responsibility keeping them fed and healthy; that part really sucks. Thankfully there are some great Android apps for taking care of your pets that make the whole process as painless as possible. Well until Android is capable of taking pets to the vet by itself, we will have to make do with the apps that we are given right now.

If you are an experienced pet owner, I’m afraid the apps won’t be able to help you much in day-to-day pet care. You’ll already know everything there is to know about grooming and keeping your pet fed. However, if you are a new pet owner, these apps will definitely help in taking care of your pets. Another reason why you would need a pet app to guide you is that because you were a cat person and now you want to be a dog person but don’t know what dogs need to be happy and healthy. Unfortunately there are not many apps that tackle exotic pets like snakes and tarantulas but you still have the Internet on your Android to search for specific guides.

Note: the best Android apps for taking care of your pets were tested on a Sony Xperia Z smartphone. The apps worked perfectly fine and there were no problems faced during the testing. Some of the apps may need an active Internet connection to offer the full feature set.

1. 11pets: Pet care

There’s a joke in there about the person owning 11 cats but I’m not creative enough to pull it out. 11 pets is a fairly new app with a few hundred users but I really like the simplicity of it. The app allows you to schedule reminders for vaccinations, de-worming and hygiene with ease. You’ll also be able to set reminders for medications for each of your pets. This is where the app gets interesting, if you have multiple pets with different needs, keeping an alarm clock or a scheduler app for Android can be a bit of a headache. Sure, if you have only one pet you can set reminders on your daily to do app but if you have more than 2 cats, it is a hectic job. Thankfully this app offers unique photo gallery and timeline for each pet. There is also a detailed food section that comes along with reminders as well. One of the best things about this app is the availability of complete medical history, including lab results, blood tests and even x-rays.

2. VitusVet: Pet Health Care App

VitusVet is a great pet care app for Android that will definitely help you keep your pets healthy and well. The app allows you to keep extensive medical records of all of your pets on hand in case of emergency. You’ll be able to track major events and daily tasks like medication, pet food and even walk times. One good thing about this app is that it allows each member of your family to log into the app and share information. This makes it extremely easy to keep track of all the pets especially when you marry into 2 dogs and a turtle. Setting daily, monthly or weekly reminders for diet, vaccination and grooming is extremely easy and anyone with access to the app can update them.

3. PetCoach – Ask a vet for free

PetCoach is an app that allows you to contact a veterinarian directly. Sometimes all you need to do is ask a professional about your pet’s health, behavior and nutrition. This app allows you to communicate with verified veterinarians and other pet experts to get answers almost immediately. One great thing about this app is that it allows you to browse thousands of pet related questions and there is a high chance that they are all answered already. I highly recommend using the search feature before asking the question yourself because most of the time that also is already available immediately. Another good thing about this app is that it caters to almost every pet there is, from Persian cats to pugs and from guinea pigs to ponies, PetCoach is always there to help you out. Right now the app is available for free and the app description say it will remain free but I have my own concerns. However, for right now it’s a great app to have on your smartphone.

4. Pet Care: Pet Health News & Tips

Pet care is a news portal for all the health news and tips for your pet. The app compiles information from over 20 different outlets that specifically cater to pets and presents them in a very consumable way. Not only will you be able to get push notifications when more pet news and tips appear on the app but also be able to share them with your friends with ease. The app is a very new on the Google play store and it is yet to prove itself but from what I see the interface is very well-designed and the articles are updated frequently. If you’re the type of person who wants to keep themselves updated all the time, this is the app for you.

5. Petable

This is an app created by a team of veterinarians so that pet owners can keep track of health as well as well-being of their pets. The app claims to know what your pets need and I kind of agree simply by going through the information. The app is a platform that focuses on medicine as well as reminders so that you can keep your pets healthy for a long while. You can create a profile for each of your pet no matter what species they belong to, set reminders for vaccinations and treatment departments as well as have a timeline of your pet’s health. One good thing about this app is the ability to connect to your vet clinic through this app, I was unable to check this feature out personally but from what I hear it works well at least in USA.
