Math is hard – there’s no denying that. Some people are keen on overcoming typical math problems and practice hard. Other people, like yours truly, really suck at this, so we find solace in the best mathematics apps.
Thankfully, now lazy people like me have the luxury of carrying the best apps that solve math problems in their pockets! No need to rotate any gears, in any brain.
These great apps that solve math problems are not only helpful for those who are not willing to exert an extraordinary amount of brainpower to know how many watermelons James ate, but also for those who are willing to learn. If you’re a math student that needs a little bit of guidance, these apps will prove invaluable in your education.
Best Mathematics Apps
We recommend these apps to high school students that have trouble with Calculus and need a helping hand. However, these apps can be a little bit inaccurate – especially when detecting the equations through a camera.
1. Mathway – Free with In-app Purchases
This app could be the best one out there. You can easily enter manual equations into it and get an instant answer, or you can try to use the camera feature – but be aware that it might not detect the equation correctly.
- Step-by-Step solutions
- Manual or Camera input
- Solves almost any type of problem
While the instant answers are really precise and easy to understand, the Step-by-Step solutions are locked behind a paywall. However, this app is great if you want to verify your answers without spending a penny!
2. Wolfram Alpha
Even though this doesn’t come with a free version, we found that it is worth it. It also helps you use math in other domains, like Astronomy, Earth Science, DNA Sequences, Weather and what not – a pretty cool thing!
- Theoretic database
- Data Analysis
- Physics, Chemistry and many other sciences support
This app is also suitable for curious souls. You can learn Geography and History through a mathematical eye, so it’s not only great for solving problems but for learning interesting stuff too.
3. Photomath – Free with In-app Purchases
Just like the name suggests, this is a math solving application that uses the rear camera of your smartphone to get the equations. For the most part, it works fine, but we had some problems getting it to recognize characters off another screen.
- Scan printed and handwritten math problems
- Scientific Calculator
- Multiple solving methods
It solves a quite wide range of problems, from basic math to Statistics and Calculus and it doesn’t require an internet connection to do that. You can also use it in more than 30 languages, a thing we found pretty nifty.
4. Malmath – Free with In-app Purchases
This app comes with a very clean and easy to understand interface – so it’s really intuitive to use. In simplified terms, the interface is inspired by a standard calculator app for Android, and it works well.
- Graph Analysis
- Problem generator
If you are a student that’s intimately familiar with scientific calculators, you’ll feel right at home with this app. Simply type in the equation and the app will solve it for you. For a small fee, you’ll also be able to see Step-by-Step solutions.
5. MyScript Calculator 2
For a small price, this app turns your phone into an interactive notebook! This app was featured in the best calculator apps for Android as well as the best S-Pen apps for Note devices. You just simply write the equation and you get an instant result. You can also add editing gestures.
- Drag and drop from and to the canvas
- Export your equations to other apps
- Multi-line writing
However, one thing this app won’t do is give you Step-by-Step solutions, so you’ll have to make do with what you get. Nevertheless, this is a great app for verifying the answers you worked on.
6. Symbolab – Math Solver – Free with In-app Purchases
If you have a lot of different types of math problems to solve, this app will most definitely be of great help. The app description says that it is your private math tutor that can easily solve any math problem and even provide you steps.
- Wide variety of types of problems
- Step-by-Step solutions
- Wide variety of calculators
Unfortunately, as with the other apps, the Step-bys-Step solutions are behind a paywall. Otherwise, the app performs exactly as it says it will. It’s able to solve algebra, limits, derivatives, functions and graphing, and even trigonometry.
7. Geometry Pad – Free with In-app Purchases
This is a dynamic geometry app for tablets. You can create complex geometric sketches, measure what you have in a document or experiment and transform what you’ve drawn.
- Plot points
- Pre-made shapes
- Move and scale
You can manage multiple documents within the app at the same time. However, the Amazon counterpart of this app is not free.
8. GeoGebra – Free
This is another geometry app for tablets. If you’ve dealt with math in the past, you’ve probably heard of GeoGebra at some point. It’s pretty easy to learn math and science with this app.
- 3D Graphing
- Free learning activities
This app only works in landscape mode so it might be an inconvenience for some, but it is a great app for learning geometry and graphing.
9. Socratic – Math Answers & Homework Help – Free
This app claims to be the fastest math solver there is. You just take a photo of your homework question or of a math equation and you get explanations, videos, and step-by-step solutions.
- Can help with your homework on any subject
- Has explanatory videos
- Step-by-step solutions
A nice thing about this app is that it is completely free so you can use any feature without paying a dime.
10. Graphing Calculator + Math, Algebra & Calculus by MathLab – Free
This app is a scientific graphing calculator that is integrated with Algebra and can become an invaluable mathematical tool.
- Scientific Calculator
- Graphing Calculator
- Probability and Statistics
There are some differences between the free app and the paid one like the user-defined constants and functions, and the Amazon counterpart of the app is only paid.
11. Math Solver – Free
This is your usual mathematics app. It can solve linear and non-linear equations for up to 5 variables, find limits, trigonometric equations and many more.
- Graphing the functions
- Matrix operations
- Send the code to your mailbox
What is nice about this app is that it is completely free, so you don’t have to spend anything on any extra features. However, it is not as complex as the one mentioned above, but it can be really helpful.
12. Automath Photo Calculator – Free with In-app Purchases
This is a great app that can solve your problem with your rear camera. Just snap a picture of your math problem and you’ll get an instant solution.
- Step-by-step solutions with explanations from tutors
- Smart Calculator with Graphing and Tables
- +250 Mathematical Functions
With this app, you can a Pocket Math Tutor, where you can ask questions about your problems – and your first question is free. Also, you should know that even though handwritten questions aren’t supported now, the developers plan to add this as a feature soon.
However, sometimes – like during exams – you are not allowed to have your smartphone with you for help. But you can bring a scientific calculator! So we’d recommend one from Texas Instruments – one of the leading companies in the industry.
What People Ask
What is the best app for learning Math?
For learning, we’d recommend the Wolfram Alpha app. It has tons of features that are not only useful but pretty cool as well and can easily attract young people to find out more.
Are Math apps good for homework?
If you’re not interested only in getting an instant solution, then we’d recommend Automath, because it has the Pocket Tutor feature, which could be useful when you just can’t get one answer right on your homework.
Are Math apps always correct?
Technically, yes. One thing that can be a problem might be the fact that your teacher might have one way of solving the problems, while the app could use another. So you should be careful with the algorithms used in step-by-step solutions.
