Enter Huawei MediaPad X1
Huawei might not be the first company which pops in your mind when you are thinking about purchasing a smartphone. But the manufacturer has gathered a rather loyal following in the past couple of years. The affordable prices and great specs are certainly eye-catching to say the least, especially if you are shopping on a budget.
The Huawei MediaPad X1 may sound like a tablet, thanks to the Pad in the name but rest assured it is not a tablet. One look at it and you will notice it is shaped like a smartphone. The thin bezels on the sides and clear ear piece on the top are indicative of a smartphone, a big smartphone but a smartphone none the less.
How BIG is it?
Well it is not the size of the gigantic Sony Xperia Z Ultra which comes at a whopping 6.44 inches. It is even bigger than that and comes at a neat 7 inches size. I will leave you for a while to ponder on that.
Now that you have collected your exploded brain and are regaining senses, the smartphone indeed comes at 7 inches. It will not be justified to name the Huawei MediaPad X1 a phablet because well it certainly is not one. In a phablet the phone part comes first but here all we see is a gigantic tablet with phone capabilities.
Is it really that BIG?
When I started writing this article, I ventured into the smartphone market myself. I went to an official Huawei store located nearby and held the biggest Android phone in my hands. I’m not a basketball player coming in only at 6.3ft but I do have fairly long spidery fingers.
I was surprised that the smartphone didn’t feel all that big in my hands. It was weird at first because I was expecting to hold a tablet but the smartphone was indeed a smartphone. This can be factored to the almost non-existent side bezel on the technological giant. Sure the smartphone is not easy to operate with a single hand, not unless you can palm a basketball.
I tried to pocket the MediaPad X1 but the clerks prompt escorted me out of the shop. By escorted I mean I was thrown out. But I’m pretty sure this phone is not going to fit skinny or slim fit jeans. If you wear baggy clothes or carry a purse, this phone will be perfect for you and not all the uncomfortable.
So, what is in it for you?
The biggest Android phone comes with a 7 inch screen and a resolution of 1200 x 1920 pixels. The screen density is 323 pixels per inch which is good for normal users. The processor is a Hisilicon Kirin 910 quad core one which is clocked to 1.6 GHz. The GPU is a well-known Mali 450.
The internal storage can either be 16 of 32 GB depending on the version. The RAM however remains 2 GB DDR3. The phone thankfully comes with a microSD card slot which can house a card of 32 GB. The smartphone does have some LTE capabilities but I would test it before purchase. I recommend that you test the phones, especially the Asian ones before purchasing.
The call quality of the smartphone is great. It also comes with a noise-canceling MIC to make you sound good too.
The front camera is of 5 Megapixels which is plenty for taking great selfies. However you will look rather odd taking pictures with an almost tablet like device. On the back we can see a 13 MP camera with auto focus capabilities. The rest of the specs are pretty much standard affair and nothing stands out that much. It’s a well-rounded albeit a big Android smartphone.
Battery
The battery is what makes the smartphone great. It comes with a built-in non-removable 5000 mAh battery. That is right folks; the giant indeed comes with an equally gigantic battery. This Li-Polymer battery will surely keep the lights on for quite a while. This is what was expected from the biggest smartphone running Android and this is what it delivers.
Price
The Huawei MediaPad X1 can be purchased from Amazon for around $400 mark.
Conclusion:
Coming at 7 inches the Huawei MediaPad X1 is not everyone’s cup of tea, shall I say jug of tea. The smartphone while clearly a behemoth is still manageable. If you prefer size over portability, then this is as big as they come. IF you have another giant smartphone you want us to cover, feel free to drop a note in the comments below.
