Recently, Google has released its newest smartphone – Pixel 4. It came with some serious photography skills enough for old Pixel owners to upgrade their devices. Officially available on the new Pixel 4 are two impressive features – Astrophography and high-resolution zoom.
Indeed, these features made the Pixel 4 a jaw-dropping device. However, older Pixel owners can go by without having to spend extra cash on the newest Pixel 4. Thanks to the latest Google Camera 7.2 mod, these features will be available on older Pixel devices too and more.
Astrophotography and High-Res Zoom comes to older Pixel smartphones
1. Astrophotography feature
Before Pixel 4 was launched, Google has already hyped up its camera capabilities that only older Pixel owners can get jealous of. While the company will eventually bring these features to older devices, unfortunately, that is not the case for all Pixel devices. This time, the Android community has stepped up to fill in the gap.
A member of XDA-Developers by the name cstark27 has created a Google Camera 7.2 mod that brings in Pixel 4’s jaw-dropping features to older Pixel phones. If you are willing to take a chance on a third-party app, you will get more than just Pixel 4’s to-die-for features.
Astrophotography is one of the main highlights of this mod. The feature was tested on a Pixel 2 phone but should work fine on Pixel 1 as well. Users will have to switch to Night Sight and keep their devices extremely steady and tap the shutter button when the “Astrophotography on” message shows up.
2. Super Res Zoom
Another highlighted feature in the Google Camera 7.2 mod is the Super Res Zoom. This feature came with the Pixel 3 but this is not the same Zoom+ which is available with the Pixel 4.
The Super Res Zoom has been tested against the regular Google Camera. In an instant, you can see a sharper image result when zoomed in at up to 7x on the Pixel 2 XL.
Google Camera mod’s complete features
Aside from the Astrophotography and Super Res Zoom features, the latest mod introduces a bunch of other new settings, improvements, and features. Included in the set of new features are Focus Distance and Super Res Zoom while in Night Sight.
Photobooth mode for selfies is also added in the set of features, just enable the Auto timer in the selfie camera’s settings. Additionally, a synthetic fill flash to brighten up faces when shot against a bright background is also incorporated.
The complete set of features in version 7.2.010, as listed on XDA-Developers forum, are as follows:
- Enable Astro mode for Pixel 1 & 2
- Enable Focus options in Night Sight (along with “infinity” – may be same as far)
- Modded lib for Learned Depth in Portrait Mode (Pixel 2)
- Enable Super Res Zoom while zoomed or in Night Sight (no zoom required) – this is like Pixel 3 stock
