Qualcomm announces refreshed mid-range 5G processors

We have seen a rise of 5G smartphones for about a year or so now. But this year has been all about affordability: mid-range phones with 5G capabilities.

The chipmaker, Qualcomm, is eyeing the mid-range segment of smartphones announcing its fresh line-up of mid-range processors solely focused on 5G capabilities.

This new line-up is said to be better and improved than its current variants of mid-range processors.

With this move, the company wants 5G connectivity to be available to the masses at an affordable price, thus, mainly focusing on 5G-capable chipsets.

Also, the line-up includes one 4G-capable chipset too.

Qualcomm reveals a fresh line-up of mid-range processors, focusing on 5G capability

One of the most important questions is: when can we exactly expect these processors to power up Android smartphones?

Qualcomm’s new line-up of processors will grace 2021 –– handsets to be released this quarter –– and 2022 mid-range and premium mid-range smartphones.

Snapdragon 778G+

First in the line-up is the popular Snapdragon 778G processor that targets the premium mid-range segment market of smartphones. The good thing about this is it has a 20-percent GPU performance boost.

The Snapdragon 778G+ has a slight improvement in CPU clock speed over the Snapdragon 778G, now running at 2.5GHz compared to 2.4GHz.

Snapdragon 480+

The Snapdragon 480 which clocks in the speed of 2.0GHz, that powers up the OnePlus Nord N200 will give way to the improved Snapdragon 480+. Clocking at the speed of 2.2GHz –– it has faster performance than its predecessor.

In addition to that, the 5G speeds of this chipset will also get a boost topping at 1.5Gbps. Now, this is already a considerable boost up from the 660Mbps on the Snapdragon 480.

Furthermore, the Snapdragon 480+ is capable of running 1080p+ displays at 120Hz.

Snapdragon 695 5G

The third one in the line-up is the Snapdragon 695 5G-capable chipset. This one is an improvement over the Snapdragon 690 chipset. You can also expect an updated Kryo 660 CPU with 15 percent more boost.

Aside from that, its GPU speeds also get an increase of 30 percent and the Image Signal Processer or ISP gets an update with the support of mmWave 5G.

Snapdragon 680

The only LTE chipset in the line-up is the 6mn process-based Snapdragon 680 –– with now an improved 11nm process-based Snapdragon 678 processor.

Unlike the three processors mentioned above, this chipset is targeted for lower-end phones. Also, OEMs like Nokia, OPPO, and Xiaomi have already shown interest in this one.

Since this the Snapdragon 680 is the lowest in this batch, this chipset can only go up to 90Hz. Finally, this chipset is tilted towards power efficiency whereas the Snapdragon 480+ is focused on the speed.

Since the year’s almost over, it’s only a matter of time before any of the smartphones to be released this year will use any of Qualcomm’s chipsets. Or if not, then we will see it early next year.
