How to Root Motorola Droid Maxx for More Access

What would our lives be like without developers? For one thing, you probably wouldn’t be reading this article on your computer. And you wouldn’t be able to root your phone. Before We Begin:

  • Verify your device model number.
  • Realize that rooting voids your warranty (although at this point, it probably doesn’t matter—even more reason to root!).
  • Download and install USB drivers on your computer.
  • A full backup of your Motorola Droid Maxx should take place before you ever start the rooting process.

Method 1: Using PwnMyMoto by Justin Case

Do not use this method for any other device it’s not intended for. This method is the successor to MotoRoot. You will need a PC and ADB.

Step 1: Download the All-In-One Installer

If you already have ADB, skip this step.

Run it as Administrator. Type Y and press enter.Then type Y to install system-wide, or type N to decline. Indicate yes or no to driver installation.

The APK file is attached by the developer at the very end of the description.

Step 3: Check Charge

Ensure your phone has 50% charge or greater.

Step 4: Open Command Prompt

The method to accomplish this varies by the version of Windows you are using. For Windows 10, it can be achieved by clicking on the Start button, scrolling through apps until you find Windows System, and selecting Command Prompt.

Step 5: Enable USB Debugging

Open Settings > About Phone and then tap Build Number seven times. From your Home screen, go to Apps > Settings > Developer Options. Enable Developer Options and turn on USB Debugging.

Step 6: Connect Phone

Use a USB cable.

Step 7: Navigate to ADB

Locate the folder where you installed ADB. ADB is a good program to get to know, not only for how to root your Motorola Droid Maxx, but many other devices as well.

If necessary, redirect the working directory of the Command Prompt to where the PwnMyMoto file is by typing:

cd <directory location goes here>

Step 9: Run PwnMyMoto

Open and run PwnMyMoto on your Maxx, which will reboot your phone up to two or three times.

Method 2: Root Droid Maxx Using One Click Root

One Click Root may be the best option for you in terms of support. In addition to 24/7 rooting services, it also makes repair, unrooting, and customization after rooting available. The company provides a refund if they can’t root your device. But yes, this means it isn’t free. And keep in mind that support for newer devices (5.0 and above) is offered on a device-by-device basis. A free scan is available via download.

Step 1: Check Root Availability

Go to One Click Root’s website Support section, scroll down, and click on the Check Root Availability button. Select or enter your model number.

Ensure the battery life on your phone is 50% or greater.

Go to Settings > General > Developers options and turn on USB Debugging. If unavailable, go to Apps > Settings > About Phone > Software info, then tap Build Number about seven times.

Step 6: Connect Device

Use a USB data cable.

Method 3: Using Ultra Root / Xposed / BusyBox [SU6-7] Android 4.4.4 by Crash XXL

This method has been described as dangerous, but it has been tested and found to work on the Droid Maxx. The Droid Maxx has proved to be difficult to crack in terms of root, and the root itself is not always an easy one either.

The hard part is dealing with a locked bootloader. You are using this method at your own risk. This is really isn’t for newbies, or for the faint of heart. It’s for those devoted, willing to take risks, and who are willing to learn a difficult method on how to root the Motorola Droid Maxx.

Step 1: Check Battery

Make sure you have a full battery before you start.

Step 2: Download Stock Firmware

The link to the scripts and ROM is given below. Ensure you use the stock firmware for your model.

Step 3: Flash Firmware

Restore your Maxx to stock. You can use a tool like RSD Lite 6.15, which is to Motorola what Odin is to Samsung.

Unzip the firmware file, and find the XML document file that should look something like this: VZW_XT1060_4.2.2.-13.90Q2.X-116-MX-17-53_CFC_1FF but will most likely differ according to your carrier, version, or build file.

Open with a program like Word Editor, Notepad,  or XML Editor and delete this line: <step operation = “got var” var =”max-download-size”/> Once that line is deleted, save and exit. Connect your Maxx, enable USB Debugging, and then open a command prompt and type:

Then run RSD Lite.

Step 4: Install Python-2.7.9

Download: Software and Drivers

Step 5: Unzip Everything to Python

Unzip the root .rar file as well as drivers and scripts to C:\Python27. If you use the Extract All option, make sure you are redirecting the files to the Python folder, not the same one that they are currently in.

Step 6: Go into Bootloader Mode

Turn off your Droid completely and long-press Power + Volume Down simultaneously.

Step 8: Run BLBROKE.bat

You will need to open a command prompt. If you are using Windows 10, go to the Start button, scroll through the apps to find Windows System, and click on Command Prompt.

Step 9: Install Qualcomm Driver, if Necessary

Right-click on the driver file, choose Install and click on Browse. Use C:\Python27.

Step 10: Run RUN_Root.bat

Your device has been through a lot, and this step should restore your phone, but it could take a while.

It will probably do this on its own after it displays a Bootloader Unlocked message.

Method 4: How to Root Using Kingo Root

The SunShine app can solve one of biggest problems with rooting Motorola Droid Maxx—it can unlock the bootloader. However, it only claims to do so on Android version 4.4.3 or below. If that works for you, then it opens the opportunity to use a standard rooting method called Kingo Root. The SunShine app is not free. It costs $25.

Step 1: Unlock Bootloader 

You must unlock the bootloader for Kingo Root to work. Here’s the SunShine app to help you out if your Maxx is 4.4.3 or below. This is an important step for how to root the Motorola Droid Maxx.

Step 2: Allow Installation from Unknown Sources

Visit Settings > Security > Unknown Sources.

Step 3: Charge Phone

Charge your phone battery to at least 50%. If your phone dies during the rooting process it can cause rooting to fail among other problems.

Step 4: Temporarily Disable Security

Firewalls or antivirus software may incorrectly perceive Kingo Root as a threat to your computer. The method by which you complete this step really depends on your version of Windows and the software itself, but the Start button or taskbar can be a good starting point. Don’t forget to turn it back on when you are done.

Step 5: Enable USB Debugging

Go to Settings > About Phone > Build Number. Now tap Build Number seven times. Return to Settings > Developer Options > USB Debugging and enable the option.

Step 6: Check Compatibility

Kingo Root provides a list of supported devices. If your device is not on the list, this method may still work, but there is no guarantee.

Install the Kingo Root app to your computer by clicking on the .exe file and running the setup.

Step 8: Launch Kingo Root

After you have complete setup through the wizard provided, open Kingo Root.

Step 9: Connect Your Droid

The Kingo Root software should detect your device. If it doesn’t, check your USB connection.

Step 10: Click Root

Do not unplug the USB cable until rooting is complete.

Step 11: Finished

Kingo Root will inform you whether rooting was successful or if it wasn’t.
